What can water do to your home?

11/6/2020 (Permalink)

When a water damage occurs, it is imperative to act quickly to avoid secondary damage to your home or business.  Whether that water is clean, or dirty, it can cause serious damage, if left untreated.  If damaged material isn't either dried, removed, and/or treated, it can cause mold, mildew or rot, which can negatively affect the structural integrity of your building.

Not only can a untreated water damage hurt the structural integrity of the building, it can also cost you a lot more money down the line, and insurance companies can deny claims for mold or neglect.

SERVPRO of Northbrook/Wheeling/Glencoe has the equipment and tools to find any hidden water damage.  Using moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras, we can pinpoint and address any water damage.  If you need help with water damage, call SERVPRO of Northbrook/Wheeling/Glencoe day or night at (847)498-8889!

How SERVPRO Keeps Your Stuff Safe

11/5/2020 (Permalink)

When disaster happens, belongings are often inevitably lost. Whether from fire or water damage,
furniture, appliances, or other possessions tend to get damaged. What’s worse, is that some
things can be saved, but are often either not cleaned fast or well enough or damaged during
restoration. At SERVPRO of Northbrook / Wheeling / Glencoe, we take every step to ensure
your belongings have the best chances of survival. Not only do we get to the job as quickly as
possible (we’re on call 24/7 for emergency services!), but we also have the training and know-
how to mitigate damage before it can get out of hand. Getting moisture out of furniture, for
instance, can prevent mold growth and irreparable damage. We can also catch and stop water
from leaking or spreading to areas of the house that have not yet been affected.
We know your belongings mean a lot, so we treat them with the greatest of care in our facility
where they are kept safe and sound. We have a special service called a “pack-out,” where we
move out all a client’s belongings into our warehouse for storage and special cleaning. A “pack-
out” both protects items from damage during the cleaning process while also allowing us to treat
and restore them in the best way possible. For example, fire damage and smoke often give
clothes and other materials a lingering odor that can’t be removed by normal means. We will
send affected items to a specialty cleaner who will treat your belongings with the best remedy
techniques available so that you won’t need to worry about them. We’ll also make sure that any
water damage, such as mold, stains, or wear is remediated. If you have any questions or
concerns, please feel free to give us a call at SERVPRO of Northbrook / Wheeling / Glencoe,
(847) 498-8889.

Creating a Fire Escape Plan

8/24/2020 (Permalink)

You should always have a fire evacuation plan for your office or business. It not only maintains a
sense of awareness of fire hazards, but also reassures your team that there is a system in place.
Fires can be incredibly destructive to property, but it is most important that everyone is safe. At
SERVPRO, we want to reassure you that we restore fire damage, so its important to focus first
on the lives of others.
Creating a fire escape plan can involve just a few simple steps:
Prepare exits
You should have a minimum of two exits. This allows traffic to be diffused to that injury from
panic does not occur and prepares for the advent that one exit is blocked off. You should make
sure that exits are clearly identified and easy to access.
Identify high-risk areas
This step is more specific to your business. Imagine where fires are most likely to occur.
Cooking equipment and electrical malfunctions are the most likely areas for fires to start, but
there may be other locations depending on your location and layout. This will help identify
where to place equipment and the most effective escape routes.
Implementation and practice
Plan escape routes and procedures so that everyone knows how to exit the building in the safest
and most efficient way possible. Consider areas where people are most likely to be, and who is
closest to each exit. You should also run regular fire drills. Once a month is a good goal to aim
for.
Mark and maintain equipment
Maintain fire alarms, fire doors, emergency lighting, and sprinklers if applicable. Also mark and
clearly identify fire extinguishers. Ideally, equipment should be placed in areas that are higher
risk, such as where there’s cooking equipment or other fire hazards.

Following these steps can help establish a safer work environment. If your home or property
does suffer from fire damage, give us a call at SERVPRO of Northbrook / Wheeling / Glencoe,
(847) 498-8889. We’re available 24/7 for emergency services for immediate recovery.

SERVPRO First Response

8/6/2020 (Permalink)

One of the most important factors in mitigating the severity of water damage is timing.
The longer water and moisture remain in your property, the more damage it causes. Not only can
mold begin to grow just 24 hours after an incident, but water can spread and can increase the
area of damage. Moisture will spread through drywall and insulation, carpets will soak up water,
and wood, and even sturdier materials can begin to warp. Moreover, bacteria in the water can
begin to multiply and become a health hazard. Any delays will cause the cost to increase and
your property to need more repairs.
Thankfully, SERVPRO is here to help. We provide a 24/7 emergency service, and we can
be on the job as soon as possible. We also have equipment ready to be deployed for immediate
use, so you can rest assured that we’ll be able to minimize damage and get working on restoring
the damage area ASAP.
If your home or property has suffered from water or fire damage, or needs mold
remediation, give us a call at SERVPRO of Northbrook / Wheeling / Glencoe, (847) 498-8889.

The Fire Cleanup Process

7/31/2020 (Permalink)

A fire, even a small one, can end up causing many more problems than you might think.
At SERVPRO, we make sure to clean and check every aspect of fire damage and make sure that
your home or property is restored to its previous state, and we do so in consideration of two
critical areas: structure and content.
Structural cleaning includes removing soot, odors, and stains from walls, ceilings,
carpeting, and woodwork. Often, even if you can’t see it, a fire will leave residue and affect areas
of your home that need to be either thoroughly cleaned or removed in order to truly get rid of any
scent. We have the training to identify areas of potential damage, and a quick walkthrough will
establish what areas need cleaning. Our equipment is the best for the job, and we have the
strongest cleaning agents available. If we need to, we’ll remove any areas that are too badly
damaged, and get them ready for replacement.
We also clean the contents of your home. This includes furniture, drapery, and other
belongings that are affected by fire damage. We provide wet or dry cleaning, depending on the
nature of the material and the severity of damage. In addition to this, we can test your materials
to see if they’ve been damaged and need repair. Your items can be meaningful, and we will be as
respectful and careful as we can in the cleaning process to get them to their preloss condition.
We can also keep an inventory of your items for record purposes.
If you’ve had any kind of fire damage and would like to schedule an appointment, give us
a call at SERVPRO of Northbrook / Wheeling / Glencoe, (847) 498-8889.

Hurricane Isaias

7/31/2020 (Permalink)

Hurricane Isaias is inbound!  The storm is currently ramping up from a category 1 to category 2 hurricane as it slowly pummels across the Bahamas.

What does that mean for us here on mainland?

We need to continue to monitor the storms progress, but all indicators seem to point to the storm traveling up the east coast.  Hurricanes can cause tremendous rain and wind damage to homes along the east coast, and its difficult to predict exactly when, or where it will die off.

Dont forget there is still a pandemic going on!  Which will make the cleanup efforts so much more difficult.  Luckily, SERVPRO is equipped to handle both disasters.  We will closely monitor the storm and the damage it causes, and you might see SERVPRO of Northbrook/Wheeling/Glencoe out on the east coast this summer helping those in need!  If you need help with anything, please call us at (847)498-8889.

Mold Remediation in Commercial Properties

7/22/2020 (Permalink)

Certain commercial properties, like hotels and apartment complexes, can easily attract mold
infestations. Mold at its best can leave a foul odor, and at its worst can be deadly, so its important
to make sure any traces are eliminated as quickly and thoroughly as possible. If you notice any
signs of mold, SERVPRO of Northbrook / Wheeling / Glencoe is here to help you clean and
remediate your property. Mold can grow in difficult places, and often it can be dangerous to
completely remove. We have the training and equipment to guarantee that mold and any odors
left behind are eliminated.
Our Process
When we remediate mold, we make sure that it is eliminated from the environment. Remediation
involves not just the right cleaning agents and equipment, but also delicate procedures that
maximize cleaning efficiency. Removing mold can cause spores to spread into other areas, so we
use negative pressure to contain the area and prevent further damage. We also can search and
scan for moisture in walls or carpets in order to find hidden mold or areas of water damage. Also,
our team is equipped with the best quality gear for both protection and removal.
Am I at Risk?
Hotels and apartments are especially prone to mold infestations since bathrooms and appliances
often allow moisture into the area. Mold is usually the result of moisture remaining in trapped
crevices, where the right temperature and moisture levels allows it to thrive, and where it is often
missed while cleaning. Of course, mold also often comes after water damage. It can grow in and
under carpets, wallpaper, and insulation, and can be very difficult to spot and clean. If you notice
an odor, or if there had been any recent water damage, you may want to check for mold.
If you would like to schedule an appointment, or if you have any questions, give us a call at
SERVPRO of Northbrook / Wheeling / Glencoe, (847) 498-8889.

Leak in the Basement? We’ve got you covered!

7/16/2020 (Permalink)

Basements are notorious for flooding during heavy rains. Because they are beneath ground level,
any weakness in the foundation or gap in the windows or walls can end up allowing water in. A
leak in a finished basement can be disastrous, but even a leakage in an unfinished basement can
be dangerous too. Water allows in mold, and often, flood water is contaminated and thus
hazardous to your health.
If you notice water coming into your basement, you should first try to find the source. If you
happen to catch a leak while it’s happening, check the windows, walls, and pipes to see if those
are the sources. Sometimes, water can come in through humidity too. To see check, there’s a
trick you can use with aluminum foil. Tape it on your wall and see where moisture appears. If
it’s behind the aluminum, you have a leak, and if it’s on top, the issue is from humidity.
With humidity, you can patch vents with foil tape and add foam insulators to pipes. You can also
get a dehumidifier, which will help keep the area dry. A leak, unfortunately, is much more
difficult to manage.
If you have windows, those are a likely culprit, as any small breach will allow water in.
Windows are usually situated in a well, so the pressure from heavy rain really tests their strength.
One option is to buy window well covers, which can help keep the rain out. Unfortunately,
sometimes water can still get in, and in that case, you need to take some extra measures. One
option is to enforce the seal on the window. You can also adjust your landscaping so that water is
less likely to get in.
A leak in the foundation or walls can lead to some serious work. Although you may need a
professional to fix whatever the issue is, you might be able to fix the problem by sealing any
cracks with hydraulic cement or waterproof coating. You can also install a drainage system that
will lessen the amount of water putting pressure on the foundation. Gutters and downpour
systems help with this too.
There are many ways that water can get into basements, and sometimes trial and error is
necessary. However, if you do have a flood, the first thing you should do is get it professionally
cleaned, so that it doesn’t cause more problems. SERVPRO of Northbrook / Wheeling / Glencoe,
(847) 498-8889, is available 24/7 for emergency services, and we have the expertise and
experience for any kind of water damage. Give us a call if you’d like to schedule a cleaning or if
you have any questions.

Five Easy Fire Prevention Tips

7/8/2020 (Permalink)

Any fire, big or small, can end up causing massive damage to your home. Even smoke and soot
can cause long lasting odors and discoloration in the walls. Here, we present a few easy tips you
can follow to prevent fire damage:
1. Install and test smoke alarms on every level of your home and inside each bedroom. You
should test them once a month.
2. Plan and maintain a fire escape plan.
3. Keep a small fire extinguisher somewhere that’s easy to access, especially in the vicinity
of high-risk areas like kitchens and fireplaces.
4. Clean high-risk areas. This includes stovetops and dryers. Drier lint can easily combust
and cause serious damage.
5. Always keep open flames attended. Stoves, candles, fireplaces always need to be
watched.

What to do about flood damage

7/7/2020 (Permalink)

Although other disasters might first come to mind when you think of destruction and
damage, such as tornadoes or fire storms, flooding is in fact the most common and deadly
weather-related disaster. According to the National Weather Service, flash floods kill the most
amount of people per year compared to other disasters. Even if you take safety precautions,
evacuate the area, and shelter in secure location, your home can still suffer from immense
damage. There are a few precautions that you can take to protect yourself.
- Check if you live in a high-risk area. If you do, consider getting flood insurance to protect
yourself. Flood damage can be incredibly costly, and it might be worth it depending on
your level of risk.
- Keep all important documents, such as IDs, insurance forms, and certificates in a water-
proof storage area.
- Keep electrical devices at least one foot above where a flood might rise. This includes
sockets, furnaces, water heaters, and other electrical devices.
- If necessary, look into ways to adjust your home, either by making it “wet-proof” or
raised on piers. This can be incredibly expensive and should only be a last resort.
If your home or property suffers water damage from flooding, don’t hesitate to call us at SERVPRO
of Northbrook / Wheeling / Glencoe, (847) 498-8889. We’re available for emergency services 24
hours a day, seven days a week.

Fourth of July Fire Safety Tips

7/3/2020 (Permalink)

The fourth is coming up, and while your plans have probably changed due to social distancing,
you still might set up a grill, bonfire, or other outdoor activities for the occasion. While it is good
to relax and have fun, you should follow a few general safety tips to avoid disaster. Injury and
damage from fire-related hazards are incredibly common on the fourth. According to the
National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), about 9,600 home grill fires occur per year, with
the highest volume of reports happening in July. At SERVPRO, we want you to have a fun, safe
experience, and we think that these guidelines can help do that.
The NFPA recommends the following:
- A grill should be placed far away from your home, deck, and any foliage or branches.
Similarly, it should be a safe distance from anywhere people are moving about -this
includes lawn games, children, and pets. They suggest making a three-foot “kid-free
zone” around the grill.
- Keep your grill clean. Fat and grease buildup in the grates and trays can lead to
dangerous flare-ups.
- Never leave the grill unattended
You should follow similar rules for bonfires too. Keep them controlled, clean, and carefully
watched. Also make sure to have a fire extinguisher nearby in case of emergency.

The facts about soot and smoke damage

7/1/2020 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Northbrook/Wheeling/Glencoe will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

High-Risk Areas for Storms and Preparation

6/17/2020 (Permalink)

It’s well-known that some places are at a higher risk than others during a storm. Living
near water or at a low altitude can potentially increase the risk of extreme flooding. Although it
might be more dangerous, these factors should not necessarily prevent you from living where
you want or need to. There are a few steps you can take to prepare your home or business so that
severe damage is less likely.
One resource you can use to see if you’re in a high-risk area is the Storm Prediction
Center. Following this link, you can see areas that are marked as being especially susceptible to
storms in a 30-year period: https://www.spc.noaa.gov/new/SVRclimo/climo.php?parm=anySvr.
Moreover, you can find also check it to see if any more immediate concerns are on the way. This
is a great tool to see how your area might be affected and what you can do to prepare.
While you should evacuate if dangerous weather is coming your way (extreme flooding,
tornadoes, etc.), there are some steps you can take to lower the chances of property damage.
- Have sandbags stored to barricade doors or other possible gaps that water might get
through.
- Build wind-shutters for doors or other protective barricades.
- Clear tree limbs that might break off and cause damage.
- Have an emergency kit on hand. This should include water, non-perishable food, a radio,
flashlight, first aid kit, and a cell phone with a charger.
- Create an emergency plan.
- Make sure you have a good insurance policy.
Taking these measures can help your chances. There’s always the possibility of water and
structural damage, but you can at least give yourself the best odds. Whenever there is damage
though, SERVPRO of Wheeling / Glencoe / Northbrook, (847) 498-8889, is available 24 hours a

SERVPRO’s Carpet Cleaning Service

6/8/2020 (Permalink)

Whether in your home or business, carpets can make or break a the aesthetic appeal of
your property. While essential for comfortable spaces, dirty carpets can begin to smell and do the
opposite of what you might hope. At SERVPRO, we offer a fast and effective carpet cleaning
service that will remove dirt and eliminate odors.
Over time, carpets collect massive amounts of dirt and other unwanted substances. Even
after cleaning with a vacuum, spray, and/or scrub, particles still tend to cling to the surface and
stain the area. Our procedure thoroughly removes any trace of dirt. We do what’s called hot
water extraction, which destroys deep-seated pockets of dirt through use of waterpower and
vacuuming. The hot water extractor (HWE) sprays a high-powered stream of, well, hot water,
and a cleaning agent that removes soil by using heat and pressure. The extractor then sucks the
moisture and dirt from the surface. It’s important that this last part is done properly by
professionals, because lingering moisture can in fact cause further problems, such as mold and
water damage.
Not only will SERVPRO make sure that your carpet is thoroughly cleaned and dried, but we
also have a variety of tools for the job. For most tasks, we have a truck mounted HWE that can
provide a massive amount of power to clean and dry as quickly as possible. For small-scale
operations and areas that are not accessible to our larger HWE, we utilize a portable version that
allows us to get to any area that might need cleaning.
Carpets cleaned with how water extraction can make all the difference in comfort and
cleanliness. If you would like to schedule a cleaning, or if you have any questions, give us a call
at SERVPRO of Northbook / Wheeling / Glencoe, (847) 498-8889.

Keeping your Home Sanitized and Safe During the Pandemic

5/18/2020 (Permalink)

Between staying at home, learning how to keep busy, and doing your best to keep our community safe, the last thing you need to worry about is danger within your own home. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, there are a few things that you can do to keep your living space safer. When you need to go out, you risk bringing germs inside, even if you are not infected. Besides washing your hands thoroughly with hot water, there are a few other steps you can take to minimize contagion.

Your clothes could potentially carry the virus. Studies have shown that COVID-19 can live for a long time on surfaces, so it is best to wash clothes you’ve worn outside in the hottest setting that your laundry machine allows for. This will minimize the chances that it will hide in your fabric and potentially infect you or your loved ones.

You should also disinfect any high-contact zones. This includes doorknobs, cabinet handles, and anywhere that people often need to touch. Ideally, you should use a sanitizer wipe, but if those aren’t available, some warm water and soap should suffice.

Of course, if there are problems that you are concerned about or are having difficulties with, you can also contact us at SERVPRO of Northbrook / Wheeling / Glencoe, (847) 498-8889. We have special equipment, such as our electrostatic disinfectors, and an expertly trained crew to take care of matters professionally and swiftly.

COVID-19 Health Concerns

3/16/2020 (Permalink)

Right now, we’re in a state of emergency here in Chicagoland. Dine-in restaurants and
bars are closed, events are being cancelled, and grocery stores are packed. Our motto is “Like it
never even happened,” and even against these odds, we are determined to do our best. If you
think your home or business has a chance of containing COVID-19, call us and we’ll take care of the issue. COVID-19, or the Coronavirus, is especially deadly to those at risk; the virus is
especially deadly for older adults and people with health conditions, and as a damage mitigation
service, we want to help our community as best as we can. At SERVPRO, we have the best
equipment for dealing with these current issues. Our electrostatic disinfectants cover a large
surface area, and because of their technological advancements, they stick and clean better than
other comparable devices. They’ll also keep sensitive equipment and delicate belongings safer
than other options because they do not require saturating the area. With just a thin layer, the
positively charged solution it dispenses holds onto surfaces. On another note, you might find it helpful to know that we practice preventative
measures to protect our team members. Each technician is trained and equipped to deal with
hazardous areas and will secure the area as best as possible. If you have any questions or concerns, please give us a call 24/7, at SERVPRO of Northbrook /

SERVPRO’s COVID-19 Prevention Service

3/13/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Northbrook/Wheeling/Glencoe is Here to help in any situation!

As of now, COVID-19, or the coronavirus, has become a world-wide concern as it has rapidly
infected well over 100,000 people and has caused over 5,000 deaths in a short amount of time.
Due to its extremely contagious nature, COVID-19 can spread quickly, and, as you most likely
know, it is very deadly to those at high-risk. Everyone is working to slow the spread of COVID-
19, or the Corona Virus, and at SERVPRO, we’re dedicated to helping with any disaster or
emergency.
Of course, it is of the highest importance that you take preventative measures on your own: wash
your hands, don’t touch your face, avoid places with a high volume of people if possible, and go to the doctor if you feel the symptoms of the virus arise. Nevertheless, if you believe there is a
chance that COVID-19 is in your home or workplace, SERVPRO can disinfect the area efficiently and effectively. Our team is equipped with electrostatic disinfectors that get the job done faster and better than other methods. As the name implies, these sprayers utilize electrostatic technology that causes an atomized solution to emit charged particles that stick to surfaces and provide an even, wide coverage. This allows for the spray to reach difficult areas, while also minimizing any damage that a spray might cause to delicate objects. For large areas with sensitive equipment that needs a fast and thorough decontamination, electrostatic disinfectors are the best choice.
Right now, as a country, we’re all working together to prevent as many infections as possible and SERVPRO is doing their part to mitigate the severity of this pandemic. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at SERVPRO of Northbrook / Wheeling / Glencoe, (847) 498-8889.

Sump Pumps: Maintenance and Utility

1/6/2020 (Permalink)

For some basements, a sump pump is mandatory, and even if your basement doesn’t necessarily need one, they can always come in handy during a flood. However, a mechanical failure could lead to disaster and it helps to know how to keep up maintenance in order to make the most of them.

As you may know, sump pumps collect water in a basin, and then pump it out in a place where it can be safely drained. They are most often installed in basements where flooding typically occurs, either because of issues in the foundation, the depth of the basement in relation to the water level, or other reasons. However, they can also be useful for homeowners who want an extra measure of safety in case of unexpected flooding. At the end of the day, a sump pump can prevent heartache, monetary loss, and water damage.

As useful as they are, sump pump failures can occur. It just takes a power outage or accumulated debris, and you’ll find yourself with a flooded basement. However, with regular maintenance you can better ensure safety. Power outages, which often happen during a storm, can end up turning off your sump pump. This is easily fixed with a back-up generator. Another issue that commonly occurs is a stuck switch. Debris, or even just a mechanical error, can cause the switch in the sump pump to get stuck. Sump pumps can also simply get old and stop working. Their lifespan can range from 5-30 years, depending on the type of pump, so you should begin to check on it during heavy storms or other events that could lead to flooding when it is at risk of failure. For regular maintenance, once a year, you can clean it out by disconnecting it and rinsing it out with running water, cleaning out all the pipes and valves.

Paying attention to your sump pump and cleaning it out every year or so can help prevent issues. However, unexpected problems can always come up, so if you have any questions, concerns, or need of assistance, please call us at SERVPRO of Northbrook / Wheeling / Glencoe, (847) 498-8889.

Preparing for Fire and Water Risks During Winter

11/21/2019 (Permalink)

With the winter coming in full force, it’s a good idea to start thinking about how you can lower the chance of events that often cause water or fire damage during the cold seasons. While pipes freezing, as we have mentioned in another blog post, is one of the leading causes of water damage in cold weather, there are other hazards that can lead to other catastrophes.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, the second most common cause of home fire deaths is from heating equipment, just behind cooking fires (https://www.nfpa.org/News-and-Research/Data-research-and-tools/US-Fire-Problem/Heating-equipment). Space heaters are especially risky, because they can often ignite flammable objects in their vicinity. Being mindful of the things around your space heater can prevent disaster; keep them away from flammable objects and make sure to turn them off before you go to bed. Also, dirty equipment can sometimes lead to fires. Make sure to regularly maintain chimneys and other heating systems in order to maintain a safe environment.

Often catching people unaware, icicles and snow can often fill up gutters and other areas of water flow and then freeze, making an ice dam. This can cause water to build up and damage the infrastructure of your home. Maintaining and cleaning gutters before they freeze can often help prevent this.

If you have any questions or concerns about house maintenance, fire, or water damage, please give us a call at SERVPRO of Northbrook / Wheeling / Glencoe, (847) 498-8889.

Saving Time and Money with SERVPRO’s Move-Out / Pack-Out Services

11/1/2019 (Permalink)

Flooding can end up causing lots of water damage not just to your home, but to your belongings as well. Sometimes, items that seem irreparable, like clothes and furniture, are in fact restorable with the right methods. At SERVPRO of Northbrook / Wheeling / Glencoe, we can help with damaged belongings as a part of our move-out / pack-out service. While we do what we can to fix items on-site, some things need to be taken out for professional cleaning (either at our location or in the hands of a specialist). This will not only give your belongings the best chance of being restored, but also prevents further damage caused by mold and mildew.

Moreover, it can be a hassle to get all your belongings outside of a high-risk area. Often, most things need to be out of the way so that our specialists can access areas of drywall, flooding, and other places of water damage for proper restoration services. We make this process easier by providing you with the means of moving and storing belongings for either simple storage or restoration (as mentioned above). This way, we cut both the costs and time involved in the process and make everything that much less stressful. If you have any questions about our move-out service, or anything else, please give us a call at (847) 498-8889.

Freaky Fire Stories: Strange Cases from the SERVPRO Files

11/1/2019 (Permalink)

At SERVPRO of Northbrook / Wheeling / Glencoe, we usually take care of fire damage caused by the usual: kitchen, electrical, accidents with fire hazards, etc.; however, there are some strange cases that illustrate that such disasters can be completely unpredictable. In the spirit of Halloween, we’re providing some scary stories about fire hazards.

The mystery of the rogue microwave: One of the fires we set out to clean up was caused by a microwave. This isn’t necessarily a rare occurrence, but this case was particularly strange. Often, fires start in microwaves because someone put aluminum or a metal utensil in it, or if it was turned on without anything inside it can combust. This wasn’t what happened here. Although it was plugged in, the microwave wasn’t in operation. For some reason (probably electrical) it just decided to flare up, but we’re getting some 2001: A Space Odyssey vibes anyway.

Spontaneous Combustion of Towels: Another case was caused by some towels that decided to combust on their own, with no initial fire involved. While this might sound strange, we actually know the reason for this one. These towels were used to treat stairs with wood stain, and when they were left in a pile, they began to catch on fire. Towels that are soaked in grease or other materials can, if heated up, combust. This is more common if they’re put in the drier, but it can happen on an especially warm day too.

Some other strange incidents are caused by things that otherwise seem harmless. Collected sawdust, air-spray deodorant, and non-dairy coffee creamer can occasionally be culprits for fires. According to PA Media on indpendent.ie, there were several peculiar incidents that occurred in London, including “A teenage boy on his first date sprayed a can of deodorant on himself, then inexplicably lit what remained in the can, causing an explosion,” “A dog hit the controls of a toaster as it leapt on to a worktop to reach food, setting fire to a bag,” and “A pigeon dropped a discarded lit cigarette down a chimney, starting a fire in a bird's nest” (https://www.independent.ie/world-news/and-finally/bizarre-causes-of-fires-revealed-29868711.html). As you can see, there are many weird ways that fires can start, but with knowledge, many of these are preventable. Of course, if you have any problem, question, or concern please give us a call at (847) 498-8889.

Water Damage in a crawlspace

10/23/2019 (Permalink)

Entrance to crawlspace.

Picture this:  You just bought your first home, and you are absolutely in love with it.  A month goes by and you start to smell something funky.  You discover the source of the smell is coming from the crawlspace, which to date, you have not opened.  You open the hatch door and discover that nearly half your crawlspace below your home is covered in sewage.

What do you do?

First and foremost, get in contact with your local plumber and have them discover, and fix the source of the water.  Every situation is different, but it cant hurt to call your insurance company to see if you have sewage backup.  Next step...CALL SERVPRO!!

Once we evaluate the situation and make sure it is safe to go into the crawlspace, crews will suit up and head down there to begin the cleanup.  Many times, we have to remove the top layer of soil if the crawlspace is unfinished.  Once that top layer is removed, crews will begin disinfecting anything that came into contact with this dirty water.

When its all said and done, crews will leave drying equipment for a slightly extended time, to dry the rest of the soil.

Who is going to clean this up?

Preventing Frozen Pipes During Winter

10/16/2019 (Permalink)

Winter is coming, and in Chicago temperatures can drop to dangerous levels. In addition to all the other problems that come with snow and sub-zero temperatures, freezing pipes can cause massive, costly damage to your property. Frozen pipes are one of the most common causes of property damage during the winter because they often fracture and break as they become ice-cold in temperatures below 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Ultimately, they can end up costing a lot of money depending the severity. Pipes can break and flood, and they can cause water damage in walls and foundations. Thankfully, there are some steps you can take to prevent them from freezing in most cases.

  1. Let cold water drip from your faucet. This is a simple method that will help prevent exposed pipes from freezing by creating a flow. Although this is not a guaranteed method, it can often help.
  2. Always keep the thermostat on. Even if you leave the house, you should always leave it at least at 55 degrees. While it can be costly to leave the heat on, it is far less expensive than fixing your plumbing and/or cleaning up a flooded area of the property.
  3. Add insulation. Adding insulation to exposed pipes can help a lot. This is time consuming, but it doesn’t cost much and helps in the long run. Also, make sure to seal any cracks in drywall or any other place that has plumbing running through it.

If you find your pipes are already frozen and not fractured or broken, you can try running water through it or heating it up. These methods of prevention are affordable and pretty simple, so as long as you’re diligent, ideally you will not have to experience this issue. However, if a problem occurs, or if you just have any questions, give us a call at SERVPRO of Northbrook / Wheeling / Glencoe, (847) 498-8889.

Keeping your Pets Protected During Storms and Other Emergencies

10/7/2019 (Permalink)

It’s hard to know just how bad a storm will hit, and even harder to know what kind of damage it will cause to your home. Amid all the chaos that a leaking roof, a power outage, or a flooding basement can cause, it can be easy to forget your pets could be in danger.

Here are some simple and easy steps that you can follow to make sure your pet is as safe and secure as can be during emergency storms:

  • Make sure that your pet is microchipped and has an ID. Of course, it’s important to keep pets indoors and in a safe environment, but sometimes loud noises can frighten them and, depending on the pet, lead them to attempt an escape.
  • Keep extra food and clean water in a safe, water-proof area. It’s possible that your water supply could be shut off or contaminated, and so you should keep some handy just for your animal friend.
  • Give your pet medication, a thunder vest, or whatever else they need to keep their anxiety down. Make sure you check in with a vet before you decide on any medications. If they have a space where they feel safe, make sure it’s available to them.
  • Have a contingency plan for their bathroom needs. In extreme cold, rain, or storms, you won’t be able to take your pet out. If you have a cat, keep a clean box, and for dogs you can use sanitation pads in the bathroom or any other water-proof areas.

These guidelines can help you create a safe environment for your pet during emergency situations. Still, you know your pet and their needs best, and you can always adjust what you need to do based on the context. After a flood, it’s always a good idea to call a professional in case any dangerous molds (which are harmful to both pets and humans) might creep up. Feel free to ask any questions here at SERVPRO of Northbrook / Wheeling / Glencoe, (847) 498-8889.

Damaged Belongings and the Risks of Mold: How SERVPRO can Prevent Catastrophe

10/7/2019 (Permalink)

Let’s say a storm hits and part of your home floods, and let’s say that it’s not that bad. Some water got on the carpet, pooled in the basement, or sunk into the drywall, sure, but it seemed to dry the next day and everything at least appeared okay, so you decided to just let it go. It’s easy to do with all the hassle and stress that you might imagine scheduling an appointment would entail.

However, letting water damage linger, even if it seems gone, can have some nasty repercussions that end up costing a lot more time and money than it would have if it was caught early on. Over time, bacteria that was in the water can fester, which can lead to health hazards. Just after 48 hours, mold can begin to grow too, bringing with it a lingering mildew scent. While belongings, if untouched by water, are safe for some time, they might absorb that smell if in proximity.

Of course, if your stuff has come into contact with water, it’s at serious risk. Within 48 hours, you can still clean it, air dry it, and even freeze it to salvage whatever you can (if you’re interested, check out this excellent article that offers some tips: https://www.consumerreports.org/cleaning/how-to-salvage-valuables-after-flooding/).

Still, if potential hazards aren’t nipped in the bud, your items will be at continual risk. While it might seem like a chore, at SERVPRO we’re happy to come by and scan the area for potential areas of damage, and if there’s the possibility of mold, mildew, bacteria, or any other hazards, we’ll be on the job quickly and efficiently to minimize any stress or anxiety you might have. If you have any questions or concerns, please give us a call at SERVPRO of Northbrook / Wheeling / Glencoe, (847) 498-8889.

Summer Barbeque and Grilling Safety Tips

8/12/2019 (Permalink)

Although we might be nearing the end of August, there’s still plenty of time to have barbeques,
grilling, and other outdoor events. Of course, while these can be a good way to spend an
afternoon, they can also lead to fire damage. By following a few of our safety tips, you can keep
your summer outings fun and stress-free. And besides fire-safety, maintaining your grill can also
lead to healthier and tastier fare.
Besides the obvious, like turning the grill off and placing torches or the firepit away from
flammable objects, you can take some easy steps to prevent smoke and fire damage that could
otherwise cause lots of stress and, more importantly, harm.
Clean the grill. Sometimes it’s easy to forget cleaning the grill, but grease buildups can quickly
become major hazards. After the grill has cooled off, disassemble it and scrub the plates and
grates with soap, and then do the same with the drip pan and exterior. This will also get nasty
bits of charcoal and other remnants of celebrations passed that could add some unwanted flavors.
You really benefit on all fronts here.
Check for gas leaks. You can also check for gas leaks whenever you’re about to grill. A simple
way to do this is to cover possible leak areas (hoses and the places to which they attach) with
soapy water. Turn the grill on and see if bubbles come up in any of these places. Many factors
can lead to damages here, and often it’s easy to miss.
Keep a spray bottle filled with water nearby. This way, you can extinguish small flare ups before
they become an issue. It goes without saying that if you are proficient with one, you should also
have a fire extinguisher somewhere nearby,
Don’t turn on the gas while the lid is closed. This can cause gas to build up and explode once it’s
opened. This is not only hazardous to your property, but to you as well.
Please have fun this summer and take care to make sure a disaster doesn’t ruin an otherwise
relaxing event. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact SERVPRO of Northbrook /
Wheeling / Glencoe at (847) 498-8889.

Introducing our Equipment pt. 2: Ozone Generators and Extractors

8/5/2019 (Permalink)

Carlos extracting water from a carpet using the weighted extracting unit.

Previously, we talked about dehumidifiers and air movers, which we use to clean up water
damage through air-flow control. Although these two machines are probably the most commonly
seen among our inventory, we have many more to take care and restore whatever the job
requires, whether it is damage from fire, water, or mold. Today, I’ll introduce a few of our other
machines that our technicians at SERVPRO of Northbrook / Wheeling / Glencoe are
professionally trained to use for maximum efficiency, ozone generators and extractors. These help with cleaning air, scents, and more nuanced areas that are harder to get to or require more power than your ordinary cleaning devices. As always, our team members are trained to use the right materials at the right job for safety, thoroughness, and efficiency.

Ozone Generators:
Ozone generators are used to eliminate odors. This includes scents that come from mildew,
mold, smoke, animals, oil, gasoline, or most other unpleasant sources. An ozone generator
breaks apart oxygen molecules O 2 , and then binds them to form ozone, O 3 , through electrical
discharge. Ozone is unstable and therefore highly reactive, so it breaks apart other compounds in
the air, which then clears away lingering scents. When an ozone generator is working, it creates a
smell reminiscent of a thunderstorm. It should be emphasized here that ozone is dangerous and
can cause harm to people and pets. We only use ozone generators when our technicians think
they’re absolutely necessary and the area is evacuated so that the procedure is safe and secure.

Extractors:
Extractors are high powered devices that eliminate scents, clean areas, and remove moisture.  Each one uses a vacuum, pump, and heater in order to pressurize the area with hot water and then extract everything in it. Our extractors come in a few different sizes and forms. We use portable extractors for smaller properties and our truck-mounted machine for large areas that require heavy-duty cleaning. The truck-mounted extractor is far more powerful and requires a lot of training to use safely. It utilizes an engine and more powerful machinery to pump hot water and chemicals where necessary, and it is often used at disaster sites or other areas that require emergency services.

Introducing our Equipment pt. 1: Dehumidifiers and Air Movers

7/26/2019 (Permalink)

At SERVPRO of Northbrook / Wheeling / Glencoe, we want the best experience for our customers, and the best possible job we can do requires the best equipment. We make sure to use top-of-the-line machines that guarantee your property is quickly and effectively restored and, as we love to say, make it "Like it never even happened." Today, we’ll be giving you an overview of dehumidifiers and air movers which we commonly deploy for water damage and flooding. Our technicians are professionally trained to determine the placement, size, and quantity of each machine for optimal performance.

Dehumidifiers: Our dehumidifiers remove moisture from the air, clearing away musty odors that can linger indefinitely if not taken care of. This also prevents mildew from growing in drywall, under carpets, or anywhere else in the property that has collected moisture. There are two types of dehumidifiers, condensate and desiccant. A condensate dehumidifier refrigerates the air using evaporator coils to condense it. The dehumidifier then extracts the air through a filter, afterwards releasing dry air. As one might surmise, a desiccant dehumidifier pulls air through a desiccant material that sucks up moisture. Our dehumidifiers can remove between 8 and 20 gallons of water from the air per day. As you can see, they provide a safe and easy way to remove moisture that would otherwise cause further damage.

Air Movers: Air movers are essentially giant fans that push air out in order to expedite the drying
process. Although they may not sound as complicated as dehumidifiers, we set them up in such a way to create a vortex throughout the affected area, bringing in a powerful airflow that helps get water out of carpers, wood floors, drywall, and other surfaces. The water-saturated air is then taken care of with our dehumidifiers. This helps get water out of your property quickly without having to damage any of the saturated areas.

Water Damage Happens Year Round!

7/17/2019 (Permalink)

One common misconception is that water damages don’t happen year round.  Sure, summertime we get to enjoy somewhat of a break, and we aren’t pulling our hair out with the stress, BUT WATER DAMAGE HAPPENS YEAR ROUND.  You should always be checking your home for signs of water damage not only in the basement, but anywhere water travels in your home.  Hot water heaters, pipe bursts, or even a sump pump failure can happen in the dead of summer.

Although we are past the rainy season, all it takes is for one storm to roll through Northbrook to cause you to lose power!  Which means if you don’t have a backup battery on your sump pump, there very well could be a foot of water in your basement!  These things never happen at a convenient time either, so make sure if you take a vacation this summer, that you have someone pop in and make sure you don’t have an unwanted swimming pool in the basement.

If you are ever in a situation that you need help cleaning up after a water damage, call the professionals at SERVPRO of Northbrook/Wheeling/Glencoe, day or night, at (847)498-8889.

Fire Safety Tips for the Fourth of July

6/28/2019 (Permalink)

With the Fourth of July coming up, it is a good time to talk about fire damage.  Fireworks, cookouts and candles can all pose risks to properties, so always be careful with any flames indoors or outside. Make sure that your grill, bonfire, or any other potential hazards are far away from flammable materials. These can be obvious things, like a wooden awning, or any other part of your home, but also grasses, debris, chair cushions, etc. This might go without saying, but always keep an eye on kids, especially when fireworks (even seemingly harmless things like sparklers) are involved. Also, if anyone has had a few too many adult beverages, its best for someone who’s sober to take over any duties involving potential fire hazards.

Although we all hope for a beautiful day, it’s also good to keep an eye on the weather. High winds can end up blowing smoke or fire farther than you’d expect. It’s also a good idea to keep an extinguisher handy, just in case things get out of control. Following some simple guidelines, you should be fine; however, if something does go wrong and a fire breaks out, SERVPRO of Northbrook / Wheeling / Glencoe is here to help. It’s important to recognize that fire damage can lead to many more problems that we can help with. Smoke and soot facts!

6/19/2019 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Keeping Your Home Healthy with SERVPRO’s Air Duct Cleaning Services

6/17/2019 (Permalink)

Even though Chicago weather can change on a dime, it can safely be said that it will get hot and humid this summer. When people turn on the air conditioner, they usually don’t think about the air duct system involved, but without proper maintenance, they can cause problems under the radar. Although SERVPRO is known for water and fire restoration, we also offer HVAC cleaning services that can help create a safe environment for you and your family.

When dust and dirt build up, it can end up damaging your air conditioning unit, which can end up being an expensive hassle to fix. It can also collect pollen, mold, pet dander or other substances that could cause issues with allergies and odor.

Thankfully, SERVPRO offers an efficient and healthy inspection and cleaning service that can identify and eliminate any problems going on in the air ducts of your HVAC system. Our negative air pressure vacuums can clean out debris and build up while we also use a safe, chemical vapor that eliminates odors. While we don’t repair HVAC systems, this does prevent possible damage. On top of increasing the lifespan of your HVAC system, this also keeps your home fresh, healthy, and cool. If odors persist, there could be water damage or a mold infestation that we will be happy to clean up. While we don’t repair any mechanical failures with HVAC systems, we do help maintain and prevent possible problems with them.

To schedule an HVAC inspection, call SERVPRO of Northbrook/Wheeling/Glencoe today at (847) 498-8889!

Storm Tips: How To Prevent Basement Flooding

5/30/2019 (Permalink)

Sometimes when it rains… it floods. Basements are particularly vulnerable to flooding during severe storms and while there are some things that you can do as a homeowner to protect your property. Here are a few tips to prevent basement flooding:

Wall well covers

There are a variety of these you can get. Some are clear, so that you can still get light in if yours has a window. I can personally attest to these, as I installed them after my basement flooded a few times about a year ago during a storm, and it has never happened again.

Keep valuables in plastic bins with lids

Often these bins will help to protect your possessions from water damage in the case of
flooding and can save you some heartache.
Clean sewers, drains, gutters, and downspouts
If you have a door that leads outside in your basement, make sure it is properly sealed

Have a sump pump ready at hand

Following these guidelines will prevent many instances of water damage. However, there are always unforeseeable circumstances, like cracks in the foundation. Of course, if water does get into the basement or the rest of the house, SERVPRO of Northbrook / Wheeling / Glencoe is ready to answer your call. Our team is expertly trained to handle water damage and our machines are equipped to help dry out your home and prevent further damages, from either water or mold. We will also analyze any potential dangers to the structure of the building and work quickly to clean and sanitize flooded areas.

Finally, after we have cleaned and removed any hazardous material, we will restore your home to its previous state.

Fire Safety

5/20/2019 (Permalink)

It might be easy to forget about fire risks during Chicago’s storm season, but even though the potential for water damage is higher during this time of the year, you should always take the necessary precautions to prevent fire hazards.

  1. Install and test smoke detectors

You’ve probably heard this one, but I cannot stress how important it is that your smoke detectors are in the right places and are regularly tested. There should always be one on every floor (including the basement) and outside of each bedroom. If they’re on the wall, they should be 4 to 12 inches from the ceiling, and if they’re on the ceiling, at least 4 inches from the wall. This ensures that the fire will be detected before it becomes too large. You should also test your alarm once a month, change the batteries once a year, and replace it every ten years.

  1. Purchase a small fire extinguisher

Small fire extinguishers can be purchased at your local hardware store. You should always have one in an easily accessible place in case of emergency. It’s important to stop fires as fast as possible, so you’ll want it in a place where you can find it quickly.

It’s easy to forget that appliances and other conveniences can also be fire hazards, but you should always remember to keep an eye out for possible dangers. Keep flammable materials (towels, oven mitts, rugs) away from stoves or fireplaces. If you have a fireplace, make sure that you install a chimney cap, close the damper, and schedule a yearly inspection.

Of course, any fire, even if it’s only brief, leads to odors, soot, and other damages that SERVPRO of Northbrook/Wheeling/Glencoe can professionally restore, like it never even happened.

Mitigation vs. Restoration

5/20/2019 (Permalink)

Building owners and property managers are likely to hear about mitigation when arranging for damage restoration. Mitigation should precede restoration, and storm or water damage may become more difficult and costly to restore without timely mitigation.

Limiting Damage

The goal of mitigation is to limit the severity of damage to a structure. In the event of storm damage, this phase may involve the following measures:

  • Boarding up broken windows
  • Tarping over roof damage
  • Extracting standing water

The first two methods can prevent more contaminated water from leaking into a structure and keep out debris. Standing water from a flood or sewer backup is contaminated and will continue to degrade until it is pumped out of a structure.

Preventing Secondary Damage

A flood cleanup company can eliminate the types of primary damage that are prone to cause secondary damage. Clean water and contaminated water can both lead to the following forms of damage:

  • Corrosion
  • Mold growth
  • Rot
  • Ruined building materials or contents

Rely on the expertise of trained professionals to determine whether porous contents or materials such as drywall or insulation should be torn out and replaced. A mitigation and restoration company can provide a variety of cleaning methods and rebuild a damaged structure.

Restoring Damage

Restoration can commence as soon as the area affected by storm or water damage is completely dry. This phase of the process involves rebuilding, returning cleaned contents or replacement items and taking other measures to restore a structure to pre-damage condition.

Some companies specialize in either mitigation or restoration. An all-in-one company provides both services. It is easier to guarantee a seamless transition from mitigation to restoration and a more accurate estimate when the process is started and finished by a certified flood cleanup company in.

If you need any help with mitigation or restoration, call the professionals of SERVPRO of Northbrook/Wheeling/Glencoe at (847)498-8889.

Cooking Fires!

5/20/2019 (Permalink)

Cooking fires are the leading cause of fire damage in the US.  The reason is because the kitchen is where heat, water, gas, electricity,  and grease come together.  Grease fires can cause huge devastation and most people do not know how to properly put out a grease fire.  The first thing that needs to happen is TURN THE HEAT OFF!  Once you take away the source of the heat, you must place a metal lid on whatever you are cooking and apply baking soda to the top.  NEVER TRY TO PUT OUT A GREASE FIRE WITH WATER!  This will only cause more issues and will make the fire worse.

The second leading cause of Fires in America is electrical fires.  These can happen for a number of different reasons.  They can include faulty appliances, worn or faulty electrical wiring, improper use of electrical outlets and worn out breaker boxes.  This is especially true for older homes, which do not always have the proper wiring to handle the electrical appliances we use today.  This can cause shorts and sparks that can actually ignite inside the walls.  Also, old circuit breakers are made to shut off electrical current when the circuit is overloaded as a way to prevent fires, but often times the connections may be worn or broken, and do not activate the breaker switch.

No matter the cause, always be aware that fires can happen at any moment, and to always be prepared for whatever happens!  If you do find yourself in need of professional help after a fire, never hesitate to call SERVPRO of Northbrook/Wheeling/Glencoe at (847)498-8889!

Recent Rainfall

Understanding "Black Mold".

5/20/2019 (Permalink)

Stachybotrys chartarum is the type of mold often called “black mold” or “toxic mold”. Sensational news reports warn about the dangers of black mold and these stories can be alarming and confusing. Any mold in your home should be treated with caution – stay out of affected areas and don’t touch or disturb the mold.

Please refer to our Mold Damage Tips to learn more about mold and what to do until help.

How Do I Tell If It’s Black Mold?

Since many types of mold can produce allergens and irritants, you should contact a qualified mold remediation company regardless of the color or type of mold. In many instances, multiple types of mold can exist in the same house or structure. If you suspect that you have a mold problem, contact a SERVPRO Franchise Professional immediately.

If You See Signs of Mold, Call Us Today (847)498-8889

Understanding Mold

When water intrudes into your property, mold growth can start in as little as 48 hours. Consider the following mold facts:

  •  Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  •  Mold spores are microscopic, float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  •  Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce toxins harmful to humans and pets.
  •  Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise the mold may return.
  •  Mold often produces a strong, musty odor, and that odor can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  •  Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent

If you need help identifying and removing black mold, call the professionals at SERVPRO of Northbrook/Wheeling/Glencoe at (847)498-8889 today!

Transparency is key when hiring a commercial restoration company!

5/20/2019 (Permalink)

When it comes to small pipe leaks, or drywall repair, most business owners think that they can probably handle that themselves.  When it comes to your entire building flooding or experiencing a fire, you would have to call a professional restoration company.  But who do you choose?  With the amount of restoration companies popping up daily, its hard to choose who would be the best to hire.  When hiring a restoration company, keep certain things in mind.

Go to their website

This may sound a little scary, given the amount of scams and false information on the internet, but you will know immediately if their website is legit.  Some things to think about would be links to their services.  Look to see if they have links that talk about fire or water damage, and the process that is performed in these services.  If it is a professional website, it will be clear, concise, and informative.

Give them a call and quiz them

Once you have reviewed the websites, come up with a few questions you may have for the company.  If they are professionals, they should be able to answer the questions without asking the manager, or putting you on hold.  They should be able to give you clear examples of how they have worked with these issues in the past.  If they become annoyed, or frustrated, then you know they are not the ones for you!  Professionals need to be compassionate towards their customers, because they are already dealing with a mess.

Read the Testimonials

Yelp, google, and facebook are great ways to read the testimonials of the restoration company you are potentially going to be hiring.  Companies can never delete these reviews, they can only receive good reviews to counteract the bad ones, which makes it a very accurate depiction of what kind of company you may be dealing with.  Look at the good and bad reviews and make a educated assessment on the type of company they may be.

If you ever have any questions, give SERVPRO of Northbrook/Wheeling/Glencoe a call at (847)498-8889!

Why SERVPRO?

10/15/2018 (Permalink)

When faced with a home disaster like flooding or mold it can be overwhelming figuring out what the next step should be or who to contact. SERVPRO is just one of many companies that deal with cleanup and restoration, so why pick us over our competitors? Well, because we have the resources, we have the professionalism, and we care.

Just a few weeks ago, we rode out to the area in and around Madison, Wisconsin to clean-up and restore places that suffered from record-breaking flooding. Some basements, like the Black Earth Children Museum’s, had around ten feet of flood water and needed emergency assistance in dealing with the crisis. Without enough personnel in the area, SERVPRO immediately called in the storm team, an emergency protocol whereby SERVPRO employees travel, sometimes from out of state, to decimated areas to aid in disaster relief. These teams work tirelessly to help people get back into their homes and businesses as quickly as possible. We are proud to be one of the many branches that went out to clean up the wreckage left behind by the flooding in Wisconsin.

When we got to the Black Earth Children’s Museum it was in really bad shape. Water was still in the building, ruining the carpet and endangering the walls and threatening the integrity of the building. Prolonged exposure to water can trigger mold growth, which can be deadly if not dealt with immediately. This is why we pulled up the carpets, replaced saturated drywall, and used machines to air out the facility so that it was completely dry and free from the dangers of mold.

By the time we left, the Children’s Museum was back to how it had been before the flooding, just as our motto states, like it never even happened.

Average cost of a water damage claim

10/1/2018 (Permalink)

One of the first things after experiencing a water damage that most people think of is "How much is this going to cost?!".  Well, there are many factors that go into how much a water damage claim can cost.  Some of these factors include what type of water it is or the source, the extent of the damage will influence it, as well as the general area that you live in.

According to home adviser, the average cost of water damage cleanup is around $3.75-$7.00 a SF based on the source, while repairs can cost anywhere between $450-$7,000.  Even if you are an avid DIY homeowner, it is still always recommended to have a professional take a look at the extent of the damage.  The last thing you want is to miss it and develop issues down the line.

Should you ever run into a water damage situation, dont hesitate to call the professionals at SERVPRO of Northbrook/Wheeling/Glencoe and ask to speak with one of our trained representatives.

Flash Flooding in Madison WI

9/5/2018 (Permalink)

This was the scene of a library in the basement of a childrens museum which flooded.

What makes SERVPRO so great?  It is our network of individually owned and operated franchises that have the capability to travel when times get rough in other communities.  SERVPRO of Northbrook/Wheeling/Glencoe recently traveled to Madison Wisconsin after the recent floods to help the community out.  The devastation was enormous, it seemed as though everyone had flood damage to some extent.  Driving down the road, you would see debris and building materials in the front yards.

The people of Madison were incredibly hard working and optimistic.  Nobody had ever seen rain like they had this past August.  Everyone felt great helping these people in their time of need, and the local community was grateful to receive the support they needed.

We saw crews from all over the country, from California, to Texas.  We are one of the few restoration companies that have the capabilities to pull resources from all over the country to get the job done quickly, and efficiently.

Its Hurricane Season!

8/20/2018 (Permalink)

Here in Illinois, we do not have to worry about the hurricane season.  We have our own problems with the weather!  But for those living in coastal areas, hurricane season brings discomfort and anxiety.  Coastal flooding and wind damage can have devastating effects on communities causing damage to residential and commercial buildings.

Each SERVPRO franchise is locally owned and operated and many have the capacity to travel to these communities that have been hit after a hurricane to provide assistance.  SERVPRO of Northbrook/Wheeling/Glencoe is one of the many franchises opting to travel after a storm hits to help communities in need.  Last year, SERVPRO of Northbrook/Wheeling/Glencoe traveled to Florida and provided assistance after the hurricanes rolled through.  It is tough work, but we are always here to help not only locally, but also nationally.  We are hoping for a calm hurricane season this year, but know that if it gets bad, we are always here to help!

Out of the Frying Pan: What Can You Do About Fire Damage?

8/8/2018 (Permalink)

Fire damage can be devastating for a homeowner. Aside from damaging the structure of the building, furniture, belongs etc., smoke and soot can continue to cause problems if not dealt with immediately. While everything that burned will have to be replaced, there are steps you can take to help prevent things from getting worse. First, you should seal off certain sections of your house with tarps and plastic sheets while damaged areas are being treated. Grease and soot can spread to other sections of the house, making everything worse. Odors can travel, and stains can get into your carpet, walls, and clothing. Blocking off the area can help prevent this.

Check for any leaks or other areas that could cause more problems for your home. Sometimes fire damages pipes, or there could be entry points for water in the roof. This can lead to water damage, which will only make things worse if it’s not treated right away. You can simply scan for any areas that might have this issue and keep an eye out for leaks if it rains. Moreover, you’ll need to watch out for mold and other problems that stem from water damage, as water used to extinguish fires can seep into dry wall and floors. Most often, carpet and flooring will need to be removed. These areas tend to absorb both soot and water, and it is usually much better to simply replace them. Essentially, everything that might have been covered in soot will need to be deep cleaned, and that includes clothing and other belongings that might have been damaged in the fire. Of course, some items will need to be replaced, but belongings that can withstand heavy cleaning can often be saved.

If the damaged area is not properly cleaned, the smoky odor that a fire leaves behind will never go away. There will always be at least a faint trace of that unpleasant smell. Sometimes, you can fix this problem by scrubbing the walls and floor with soap and water. Paint tends to hold odors, but if the damage is only on the surface and dealt with quickly, you might be able to get rid of it. However, sometimes these areas will need to be replaced depending on the severity of the damage. You’ll need to remove sections of drywall and perhaps even flooring. It can be difficult to tell the difference between things that can be salvaged and those that need to be replaced, but knowing will save you time and money. The professionals at SERVPRO of Northbrook/Wheeling/Glencoe will be able to discern what can be restored, and they can help you effectively remove any traces of the fire while saving as much as possible.  Give us a call today at (847)498-8889!

Hidden Killers: Mold and its dangers in Northbrook, Wheeling, and Glencoe.

7/30/2018 (Permalink)

Mold is one of the headaches that comes with owning a house. It is common, not always visible and can be very difficult to get rid of. Bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, basements, and crawlspaces are all common places where mold can take root and it can be very expensive to clean up, not to mention hazardous to your health. Unexplained illnesses can be linked to undiscovered mold problems and make air toxic if untreated which in turn, in extreme cases, can lead to death. There are however ways of attempting to prevent the growth of mold and to clean it up when it has already established itself.

Moisture is the primary contributor to the growth of mold, which is why bathrooms, kitchens and basements are highly susceptible to it. One way of preventing the growth of mold is to ensure that moisture does not get trapped anywhere. In the bathroom, make sure that the ceiling fan is working and keep it running after you shower, also ventilation can help. If you can keep the area dry, then it is unlikely to become infested. Similarly, if you investigate under sinks and other areas where water is common and make sure that no moisture is getting trapped, that should help prevent mold. Cleaning out gutters, having de-humidifiers and making sure to keep an eye on common problem spots for mold will help to prevent its growth and any health consequences. However, being vigilant does not always stop mold from taking root.

Leaky pipes in walls, malfunctioning de-humidifiers, or floods can cause mold without the homeowner realizing. If you suspect that you might have a mold problem (smell is a great indicator of this) but you are not able to find where it is coming from, there are mold testing kits. It can be professionally done for a cost or you can buy a kit for as little as $10. These kits, however, are not considered to be very reliable, so be wary if you choose to use them.

Once you have identified a mold problem there are ways of treating it. If the mold is well contained in a space of less then 10 feet, then you may be able to clean it on your own using 1 part bleach to 15 parts water.  Make sure to use goggles and gloves if you attempt to clean the mold on your own.  Also make sure that there is good ventilation and that you are careful because bleach can be dangerous.  You can gently scrub the mold away, but do not dry the wall.  Drywall is porous so the bleach will need to soak into the wall in order to really get to the mold, but this also poses another problem with cleaning it yourself.  Mold visible on a porous material like drywall can obscure a larger problem beneath the surface which will be far more difficult to clean.  But sometimes bleach is not enough. If the area affected is large, or mold has formed in carpets and ventilation systems, you will need to remove all carpeting and clean out air ducts with caution. It is important to wear a facemask so that you do not breath in any spores. Moreover, you will need to cover unaffected parts of your house in plastic sheets, otherwise spores might spread during the removal and breed in new parts of the house, exacerbating the issue. Cleaning heavily infested spaces can be very dangerous and difficult, especially if you happen to have black mold. You’ll need to identify where the mold resides and how to remove it. This includes floors, drywall, and insulation. We highly suggest hiring professionals in these extreme cases.  If you need assistance with the headaches of mold, call the professionals of SERVPRO of Northbrook, Wheeling, and Glencoe!

When It Rains in Northbrook, It Pours: What Can You Do About Water Damage?

7/23/2018 (Permalink)

We’ve all had it happen sometime in our lives. You walk into your basement after a rainstorm, check on that dripping sound coming from the kitchen, or go see why that odd noise is coming from the laundry machine and there it is: water flooding into your home. Sometimes the cause is obvious: a pipe leaks, a nasty flood outside creeps under a doorway, or the dishwasher starts pouring water onto the hardwood floor. However, something seemingly innocuous can lead to heavy damage as well. Areas prone to collecting water, like crawlspaces and basements, can slowly build up moisture and become a breeding ground for mold. Water damage, if not taken care of promptly, can lead to major catastrophes for home owners: mold can lead to health problems (death in the most extreme cases), furniture and other belongings can become permanently damaged, and even the foundation of a building can be weakened. If you’re concerned about any belongings stored in places prone to water damage, you can always place them in plastic bins. Make sure they’re elevated so that water coming in can’t reach them. Your items might seem safe in a basement, crawl space, or attic, but leaks and floods happen. Preventative measures can save you time, money, and stress.

So, what can you do about water damage? First and foremost, you should take lots of pictures and contact your insurance agency. They’ll want to see what happened before you’ve intervened to determine your coverage. The next step might seem obvious, but you should dry the area as much as possible. Mop it, lay towels on the area, do whatever you can to absorb as much water as possible, but avoid using electronic appliances. While this can help, water can seep into drywall, the floor, and other permeable objects. If this is the case, you’ll need to remove and replace these damaged areas. Sometimes it can be difficult to know just how much water has spread, as it can travel through floors and walls. A damp or moldy smell is a strong indicator that water seeped into the area, but you can also use a moisture meter, which you can buy online or at your local hardware store, to find areas that have been saturated. Of course, SERVPRO of Northbrook, Wheeling, and Glencoe can efficiently and effectively remove odors, damaged areas, and tough-to-get mold, leaving you safe and worry-free.

Commercial restoration is so important!

5/21/2018 (Permalink)

If you have a damaged commercial property, then you need to look for a company offering commercial restoration services as quickly as possible.

As with any type of property damage, leaving your damage unattended could potentially cause it to get worse. Rainwater can get into your property if you have an exposed roof for instance and this can then cause mold and water damage. Likewise, if you have broken window, this can leave your commercial business vulnerable to theft and vandalism.

At the same time, though, commercial restoration is also urgent for another reason – which is that for every working day that you are closed due to damage, you will be losing money. Commercial businesses pay a lot of overheads such as salaries, rent, bills and more on the good faith that they will be able to earn their expenses back. Unfortunately, when commercial damage strikes, these companies are then left unable to make their money back and unable to make a profit. Thus, they will continuously lose money until they are able to reopen their doors. This makes a commercial restoration company that is able to work quickly even more valuable to these organizations in their time of need.

Moldy clothes, we have an answer!

5/16/2018 (Permalink)

The reason clothing is so susceptible to mold growth is not just because of the mold-inviting circumstances within the laundry room. Generally, when it is worn, clothing collects sweat and skin cells, as well as dirt and other forms of moisture and organic material that mold loves to feast on. Then, it is placed in the laundry hamper and usually sits for days before it it is finally washed. This scenario is typical and may not result in a noticeable mold infestation, but should the soiled laundry be allowed to fester long enough, a mildew smell may be present, as well as visible signs of green, blue, gray, black, or sometimes even white mold on clothes.

Another scenario is becoming more common due to busy lifestyles and poor habits. The quick development of mold on clothes after washing may be surprising to some, but it is quite an ordinary occurrence for those with overwhelmed schedules or those who are vulnerable to procrastination because they often forget to remove clothing from the washing machine once the cycle is finished. As time passes, this leads to the rapid proliferation of mildew and mold on clothes after washing, due to the remaining moisture. Neglecting to put the wet clothes in the dryer for a few hours is not what makes mold grow. Neglecting the clothes in the washer for 6 hours or longer–sometimes a day or even a few days–is the problem. Before too long, a mildew smell will be detected in the washer and clothing. Some assume this is the residue of soap, and while that may be true to some extent, the fact of the matter is that most soaps contains lard and other organic (even synthetic) materials that mold can thrive off of. The smell is not necessarily the residue of soap, but an indication that mold is producing a secondary metabolite–the mildew smell–from consuming that soap.

What is a natural detergent to kill mold?  Here is what you will need.

  • Two 5 oz. organic castile soap bars (naturally-scented with lavender or peppermint is great but non-scented works just the same)
  • 3 cups of washing soda (no, it’s not the same as baking soda)
  • 2 cups of borax
  • 30 drops of  certified-pure lavender essential oil (optional but highly advisable for a mold killing laundry detergent)

Once you have all the materials, this is what to do.

  1. Cut the castile soap bars into small pieces or chunks. (This is crucial to avoid damaging the food processor.)
  2. Place the cut castile soap pieces or chunks in the food processor bowl. Pulse the soap on high until what remains are large crumbs.
  3. Add the washing soda to the food processor and pulse for 1 minute. (After pulsing, all the ingredients should be in powder form and well-combined. If not, try running the food processor again and then mixing with a spoon.)
  4. Empty the washing soda and castile soap into the storage container. Add the borax and blend well with a spoon.
  5. Add the essential oils of choice (optional but beneficial) and be sure to mix well.

Do not place this mixture into the drawer or dispenser, place it directly in with the laundry.

Health risks posed by standing flood waters

5/16/2018 (Permalink)

After a storm hits, and the area is flooded, there are a number of risks that you need to keep in mind before wading through the water.  The health risks associated with dirty water are well known.  This type of water has an abundant amount of germs, bacteria, viruses and other contaminates.  It is crucial to protect yourself when dealing with flood waters.

Not only do you have to worry about illness caused by contaminated water, but because the water is not clear, you have to worry about what is underneath the water.  Flood waters are known to carry insects, and other critters that you really dont want to come in contact with.  Depending on where you live, alligators are known to relocate after a flood and can easily hide unnoticed.

Another issue with flood waters is that they can sweep glass, metal and other objects that can cause injury.

Before dealing with flood waters, be sure to protect yourself!!

Understanding your coverage for Mold in IL

5/9/2018 (Permalink)

Mold growing behind a bookcase.

Before purchasing a homeowners insurance policy, you might want to read it thoroughly.  Most insurance policies do not cover mold, but why?

General maintenance is a big issue when discussing mold coverage.  In the eyes of the insurance company, small leaks and keeping the humidity down can prevent many mold scenarios.  It is the responsibility of the homeowner to make these repairs, to avoid any mold growth and prevent claims.

Floods are typically not covered by your homeowners policy as well, and generally speaking, if the water is not cleaned up in a timely manner, mold can develop, which can worsen the issue.  Unless you have additional coverage for flooding, you are responsible for the repairs.

Accidental water losses are typically covered by your policy, however, if left untreated, mold can develop which can cause issues with your claim.  It is crucial that you respond to accidental water damages quickly, to avoid having the mold discussion with your insurance company.

If you have any questions about mold and the process of treating it, give the professionals at SERVPRO of Northbrook/Wheeling/Glencoe a call day or night at (847)498-8889.

Fire Safety Tips!

4/30/2018 (Permalink)

In the United States, there is a house fire reported every 90 seconds in 2016!  That is a lot of fires!  85% of all fire related deaths occur in homes, so you should always be prepared!  You may have seconds to minutes to escape a burning building because these fires can start and spread very rapidly.

First thing every homeowner should do, is install smoke alarms.  They should be on every level and should be inside, or just outside every sleeping quarters.  Make sure that they are interconnected, and tested every month.  While smoke alarms are a great way to identify the danger, the best thing that can be done is to put a sprinkler system in your home.  This may be a costly prevention method, but it can save your life and your property.

The next important piece of advice is to make an evacuation plan!  Sit down with your family about twice a year and make sure everyone knows the quickest way out of your home.  Make sure that there are two separate ways out of the building and that everyone is aware of what to do in case of a fire.

The unsettling affects of leaving fire/smoke damage

4/27/2018 (Permalink)

Fire and smoke damage can absolutely wreak havoc on your home or business.  The most important thing to do when you experience a fire is to get help immediately.  If left untreated, the cost and scope can change drastically in the following ways.

The cost to restore increases.

When fire and smoke damage go untreated for a prolonged period of time, the odor becomes worse, and it becomes more difficult to remove it.  This ultimately keeps a restoration company on the site longer, which increases the bill drastically.  The quicker you clean, the less time it will saturate your home or business.

Deposits of soot.

Neutralizing of soot residual and deposits is an effective first clean up step. If left for long, soot can easily travel and penetrate into other rooms that weren't affected by the fire, staining the wall paint, carpet, furniture, drapes, clothing and any other household items.

Extensive damages.

Smoke and ash can mix with water to produce a very corrosive element. If not cleaned quickly, this corrosive substance begins to slowly corrode away walls, floors, ceilings and any other surfaces in your home. Cleaning up quickly with soap and water is not enough. The substance requires proper cleaning with appropriate chemicals to remove it completely in order to contain the damages.

Important steps to follow when you discover mold in your home

4/25/2018 (Permalink)

If you see visible mold, do not disturb it. You can inadvertently spread the mold infestation

throughout your home. When mold is disturbed, the mold can release microscopic mold spores

which become airborne and can circulate inside your home.

What to Do:

-Stay out of affected areas.

- Turn off the HVAC system and fans.

- Contact SERVPRO of Northbrook/Wheeling/Glencoe for mold remediation services.

What Not to Do:

- Don’t touch or disturb the mold.

- Don’t blow air across any surfaces with visible or suspected mold growth.

- Don’t attempt to dry the area yourself.

- Don’t spray bleach or other disinfectants on the mold.

How to handle a water damage at a doctors office

4/17/2018 (Permalink)

Mold under a sink at a doctors office.

Here at SERVPRO we pride ourselves on using the latest technology and skills to appropriately handle a water loss.  When we recently were called on a Pediatrics office, they had already began to show signs of mold when we arrived.  In this office, they had a lab, a station for vaccines, patient rooms, and break rooms that were affected.  In these situations, it is crucial to take a step back and really analyze the situation.  Crews cant simply come in and start tearing walls apart, they need to be extremely cautious.

Crews are trained to enclose themselves in contained for any mold loss, but when dealing with a pediatric doctors office, you need to go that extra mile.  Children come into the office with immunodeficiency's and mold can have a serious impact on their health.

The first step is getting things out that do not need to be in the room.  The more that is moved out of the affected area, the less likely there is a chance of cross contamination.  Once these things have been moved, we spend hours containing ourselves in the affected area.  Nothing comes in that isn't clean, and nothing leaves that containment that isn't either contained itself, or disinfected.  The process of containing actually takes longer than the demolition itself!

PPE must always be worn when dealing with mold, and negative air must always be running.  Once all of the required demolition has been completed our crews will go in and HEPA vacuum and disinfect the entire contained area.  This is because during demolition, mold can actually become air borne and stick to everything!  Cleanliness is a must, especially for a doctors office!

The facts about Smoke and Soot

4/17/2018 (Permalink)

The right way to clean mold

4/13/2018 (Permalink)

Mold found in an attic.

Have you ever heard of anyone say that they always have mold, they just spray some bleach on it and it is gone!  Well, that's not the case.  Bleach does kill mold, but does not kill the spores that are produced from the mold itself.  So, bleach can be a quick fix, but it does not solve the issue.

First thing that needs to be done, is find out why it is growing.  Is there a source of water that you may not know about, which is feeding the growth?  Or is it that you have a damp, humid basement?  Whatever the reason, its there, and the issue needs to be solved prior to remediation, or it will just come back.

Once the source has been discovered, now its time to do work!  Before we even touch mold, we have to contain the affected area.  Once mold has been touched or disturbed, it can become airborne and stick to other parts of the room, some which may be unaffected.  Once we contain the area and set up our proper protective equipment, negative air will be run from the contained area with an air scrubber.  This draws air from the surrounding environment, places it through a HEPA filter, and blows out clean air.

The next step is either cleaning, or removing the affected materials.  When we clean items that have been exposed to mold, we must use a HEPA vacuum to remove any surface mold, or spores that the vacuum can pick up.  Once every square inch of the contained area has been HEPA vacuumed, its time to apply an antimicrobial agent to the contained area as well.  Every square inch must be cleaned!

On some more severe cases, you might need to fog the affected area or seal materials such as studs or sheathing, which does not need to be removed.

Leading Cause of Fire Damage

4/12/2018 (Permalink)

Fire damage in a Restaurant

We have all heard stories, seen pictures, or even have experienced a fire in our lives.  But what is the leading cause of Fires in America?

Cooking Fires!

Replace or Repair Your Damaged Roof? In the Eyes of Your Insurance Company

4/9/2018 (Permalink)

Wind Damage to a roof

Roof damage can be a huge headache after a storm rolls through your area.  Roof damage is the most common storm claim in the insurance industry.  The wind from hurricanes and tropical storms can cause extensive damage to the roof of your home.  The worst part of roof damage, is the secondary damage that can occur to your home from rain entering and causing water damage to the interior of your home.

It is crucial to fix your roof as soon as possible to avoid further damage to the interior of your home.  Mold can develop very quickly, and depending on how much water is entering your home, can develop very quickly.

So how do insurance companies decide whether you are lucky enough to get a new roof?  Well, there are a few tests that they will perform in order to get an idea of what they are going to pay out.

The 25% Rule:  This is kind of an easy way to determine whether insurance companies will replace your roof.  Now, every state is different, and every insurance company is different, but this is a rule of thumb.  If more than 25% of the roof is damaged, they will most likely replace the roof.  If less than 25% of the total roof is damaged, they will typically pay to patch a certain section up.

Other tests include the Brittle Shingle Test, which measures the strength of the individual shingles.  The person performing this test will take a shingle, and try to bend it to a 90 degree angle.  If the shingle breaks, then they should be replaced.

So why do insurance companies perform these tests?  BECAUSE ROOFS ARE EXPENSIVE!  Be careful when filing roof claims, there are plenty of scammers out there that go door to door claiming that you have hail damage to your roof and that they will help you with the insurance company to get your roof replaced.  There are plenty of ways to determine if you need a new roof, get plenty of opinions and do the research!

Things To Look For When Hiring A Commercial Restoration Company

3/23/2018 (Permalink)

Commercial Properties.

If you ever have any questions, give us a call at (847)498-8889!

What is a Nor'easter?

3/23/2018 (Permalink)

A picture of the Storm from above!

For those of you who have not been watching the news lately (I know its hard), the east coast just experienced its FOURTH Nor'easter this season.  These storms cause heavy damage to the coast and can drop a ton of snow mixed with high winds.

So what exactly is a Nor'Easter?

A Nor'easter is a macro-scale cyclone!  The winds travel northeast to southwest and typically will hit the states in New England and Mid-Atlantic states.  These storms can cause severe costal flooding, coastal erosion, hurricane force winds and even blizzard like conditions.  They will typically occur between October and March.

The storms begin to form when warm Gulf stream current meets the cold Canadian air masses. When the two meet, it causes a massive drop in pressure, thus forming a massive cyclone.  These storms can have devastating effects on homes and businesses as well as transportation.

Thankfully, we don't get those out here in Chicago!

Mold Tips: Do's and Don'ts

3/22/2018 (Permalink)

Got Mold?

MOLD!!!!

The four letter word that all homeowners, tenants, property managers, real estate agents and insurance professionals hate to hear!  Mold can be a rather difficult at times, and can have negative health effects on children, elderly, people with weakened immune systems, and those with severe allergies.  If not handled properly, it can become airborne and spread everywhere!  So what are some of the best practices while trying to remove mold?

Do:

1.  Call a professional!  All of our SERVPRO technicians are highly trained in dealing with mold and have years of experience!

2.  Try to contain the mold-  Keep the mold from spreading to other rooms by keeping the door closed to that room.  You can also use painters tape to seal the room at the doorway.  You may not know when you are spreading it around, so it is best to leave it alone, until a professional can examine it.

3.  Wear proper protective equipment when dealing with mold-  When dealing with mold, you should always wear equipment to protect yourself.  You may not be able to see mold spores attach themselves to your clothing!

4.  Try to discover the source of water.  Mold (just like any other living organism) needs food, air, and water.  The only thing we can really control is the moisture in the environment.  So where is the moisture coming from?

Don'ts:

1.  DONT IGNORE IT!  Mold will not go away on its own, it will burrow into a porous material and live for a very long time.  SERVPRO professionals use specialized HEPA vacuums and a special antimicrobial agent to remove and kill mold, and mold spores.

2.  Don't use Bleach!  Bleach is not a good way to kill mold.  It is a temporary fix, but will not solve the underlying problem.

3.  Put any sort of air movement on the area of concern.  This can actually spread the mold to other areas, and can contaminate areas that were not previously affected.

4.  Don't stress about it!  We have seen it all, and can help you with any mold problem you may be experiencing!  Give us a call anytime at (847)498-8889.

Categories Of Water And How To Treat Them Accordingly

12/5/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO OF NORTHBROOK/WHEELING/GLENCOE

Nobody ever wants to see water damage in their home or businesses, but when disaster strikes, you can always trust the professionals at SERVPRO of Northbrook/Wheeling/Glencoe to take care of it!  We are highly trained in water damage restoration and know the best and most affordable way to treat whatever situation you may come across.  The first thing a SERVPRO employee will do when they get the information on a water damage, is find out what the source is.  This helps determine what the category of water is, as well as the appropriate measures are to get you back to where you need to be.

CATEGORY 1

Category 1 water is "clean" water that comes from a sink, shower, hose, or any source that has been filtrated.  Typically, you will see Category 1 water damages from pipe bursts, and hot water heater failures.  In Category 1 loses, SERVPRO is able to save a lot of building materials and contents.  SERVPRO will place dehumidifiers, air movers and in some cases, specialty drying equipment to dry the affected materials and avoid any sort of Microbial growth.

CATEGORY 2

Category 2 water is defined as "slightly" contaminated water.  This source comes from broken drains, sump pump backups, and when water travels through floors.  In these cases, carpet, baseboards, and sometimes drywall will need to be removed.  Anything that comes in contact with category 2 water, should be safely sanitized by SERVPRO employees.  Because we do not know what type of contaminates could be in the water, its always better to be safe, than sorry!

CATEGORY 3

Category 3 water is classified as "grossly" contaminated.  This type of water is mainly sewage, but seawater is also classified as category 3 if hurricane flooding causes a flood in your home.  Any porous materials should be discarded given the fact that contaminates could get lodged in the very fine pores of certain contents.  Non-Porous materials such as metal, plastic, granite etc. can be safely sanitized with the right measures.

If you ever find yourself in need of assistance, or have questions, feel free to give the professionals at SERVPRO of Northbrook/Wheeling/Glencoe a call at (847)498-8889.

Emergency Kits for the Upcoming Cold Weather

10/30/2017 (Permalink)

Cold Weather Ahead! Source: http://likesuccess.com/topics/11061/cold-weather

Tips for Putting Together Cold Weather Emergency Kits

If you’re left without power during a heavy winter storm, it’s important to have a cold weather emergency kit prepared for your home to stay warm and safe until the heat comes back on. Depending on the severity of the storm and length of the power outage, you may need to seek alternate shelter, but in most cases you will only be without power for several hours. Whatever the case, having a plan in place and an emergency kit on hand will alleviate some of the stress of the situation.

Stock your emergency kit with the following items. You may not need every item in the kit, but being prepared is the best way to cope with an emergency situation.

  • Non-perishable food
  • Bottles of water
  • Batteries
  • Flashlights
  • Battery-operated radio
  • Heavy plastic sheeting
  • First aid kit
  • Duct tape
  • Blankets
  • Kerosene space heater
  • Wood and kindling for the fireplace
  • Home generator

In addition to preparing a cold weather emergency kit for your home, it’s also a good idea to prepare one for your vehicle. If your car breaks down and you have nowhere to go, a cold weather emergency kit for your car will ensure you stay warm until help arrives. Because the temperature inside your car will drop much more quickly than inside your house. It’s even more critical to be prepared with an emergency cold weather kit. Your kit for your vehicle should include:

  • Jumper cables
  • Compass
  • Flashlight
  • Chemical light stick
  • Blankets
  • Folding shovel
  • Cat litter
  • Weather-proof jacket
  • Extra gloves, hat and scarf
  • First aid kit
  • Utility tool/knife
  • Bottles of water
  • Protein bars
  • Extra cell phone battery
  • Distress flag
  • Reflective tape or reflective triangles

Most of these items are inexpensive and easy to find, and having them on hand during an emergency can make a bad situation a little safer and less stressful. Before the heavy lake effect snow that we’ll be getting arrives, put together your home and vehicle winter safety kits and ensure you’re prepared for whatever winter brings your way.

Black Mold, What is It?

9/25/2017 (Permalink)

This picture depicts the damages mold can have on any room!

Sewage Cleanup, Sewer/Toilet Overflow

Extracting CAT 3 water before removal and sanitation.

Sewer backups should be considered an emergency since the water may contain viruses, bacteria, and other microbes that cause serious illnesses. SERVPRO Franchise Professionals have specialized training and equipment to quickly and safely clean contaminants like sewage.

Toilet Overflow or Sewer Backup?
Call Today (847)498-8889

Water damage can be classified by the three types of contaminated water. SERVPRO Franchise Professionals will inspect your home or business to determine the appropriate plan of action for the type of water encountered.

The three types of contaminated water:

Category 1: "Clean Water"

Category 1 water is from a clean source like a broken water supply line or leaking faucet. If not treated quickly, this water can turn into category 2 or 3, depending on length of time, temperature, and contact with surrounding contaminants.

  • Water from a clean source like a broken water line
  • If left untreated, can degrade into category 2 or 3

Category 2: "Gray Water"

Category 2 water is contaminated and could cause discomfort or illness. Examples include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow.

  • May contain bacteria and viruses
  • Can quickly degrade into category 3 if left untreated

Category 3: "Black Water"

Category 3 water is grossly contaminated and could cause severe illness or death if ingested and any contact should be avoided. Examples include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

  • May contain untreated sewage, harsh chemicals, and microbes
  • Water from flooding rivers or sewer backup

24 Hour Emergency Service

Water contaminated with sewage backup should be considered an emergency situation and dealt with as quickly as possible. SERVPRO Franchise Professionals are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Northbrook/Wheeling/Glencoe Residents:  Follow These Mold Safety Tips If You Suspect Mold

5/18/2017 (Permalink)

Be careful! Without proper training, you could be spreading mold throughout your home.

If you see visible mold, do not disturb it. You can inadvertently spread the mold infestation

which become airborne and can circulate inside your home.

What to Do:

? Stay out of affected areas.

? Turn off the HVAC system and fans.

? Contact SERVPRO of Northbrook/Wheeling/Glencoe for mold remediation services.

What Not to Do:

? Don’t touch or disturb the mold.

? Don’t blow air across any surfaces with visible or suspected mold growth.

? Don’t attempt to dry the area yourself.

? Don’t spray bleach or other disinfectants on the mold.

Northbrook/Wheeling/Glencoe Smoke and Soot Cleanup

8/4/2016 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.
  • Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Northbrook/Wheeling/Glencoe will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
  • Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
  • Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
  • Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.
